A shrine to tio, the devil.
Like many places in the world 'Christian' faith in Bolivia is greatly corrupted. As in all mines in Cerro Rico (the Rich Hill), there is shrine to tio, or the uncle (but never directly satan). This shrine is near the mine's entrance. The reasoning is something like, God is above in the Heavens/sky, so the domain down here in this mine must be satan's; let's try to appease him. The miners often stop by to leave offerings of alcohol, coca leaves, and cigarettes. Of course tourists are invited to join in too. Most all of my group did. In western societies it is rare to see people directly, if not naively, offering something to satan. In Potosi, it is commonplace.
